What your roof warranty covers

Every roof we install is a GAF system put on to GAF's specification by our own crew, which is what keeps the manufacturer's warranty valid. As a GAF Master Elite contractor we can also register the enhanced warranties that most roofers cannot offer.

Two warranties, not one

A roof warranty has two parts. The manufacturer's warranty covers the shingles and the other GAF parts against defects in the material. The workmanship warranty covers the installation: the nailing, the flashing, the valleys, the vents. On a standard roof the manufacturer stands behind the first part and the contractor stands behind the second.

GAF's enhanced warranties change that. On a qualifying roof, GAF itself backs the workmanship too, for years after the job, whether or not the contractor who installed it is still in business.

The GAF enhanced warranties

GAF ties its strongest warranties to who installs the roof. Fewer than 3 percent of roofing contractors in the country hold Master Elite status, and only they can register the Golden Pledge.

  • Standard limited warranty. Comes with any GAF shingle, from any installer. Covers manufacturing defects in the shingles.
  • System Plus. Available when a full GAF system is installed by a certified contractor. Longer non-prorated coverage on the materials, and GAF transfers the coverage to the whole system, not just the shingles.
  • Silver Pledge. Master Elite only. Adds GAF-backed coverage of the contractor's workmanship for a set period.
  • Golden Pledge. Master Elite only. Material defect coverage for 50 years, GAF-backed workmanship coverage for 25 years, and a GAF inspection of the finished roof before the warranty is issued.

What keeps a warranty valid

The enhanced warranties require a complete GAF system: the shingles plus GAF's leak barrier, roof deck protection, starter strips, ridge cap and attic ventilation, installed to GAF's specification and registered within GAF's window after the job. We install the full system, follow the specification and handle the registration. You get the warranty certificate.

Things that void a roof warranty, from any manufacturer: mixing in another brand's underlayment or accessories, an attic that cannot breathe, another contractor altering the roof later, and roofing over an old layer instead of tearing off. We do none of them, and we tear every roof down to the deck.

Repairs, and selling the house

A repair comes with the same free written estimate as a replacement, and the estimate states what is warranted and for how long. If you plan to sell, ask about transfer: some GAF warranties can pass to the next owner once, which is a selling point worth keeping the paperwork for.

Warranty questions

How long is the warranty on a new roof?

GAF's standard shingle warranty is a limited lifetime warranty on the shingles. With the Golden Pledge, which only a Master Elite contractor can register, material defects are covered for 50 years and GAF backs the workmanship for 25 years.

Do you warranty your own work?

Yes. Your written estimate states the workmanship warranty that applies to the job, and on a Golden Pledge roof GAF stands behind the workmanship as well.

Why does the installer matter to the warranty?

Because GAF only lets certified contractors register the enhanced warranties, and only Master Elite contractors register the Golden Pledge. The same shingle installed by an uncertified roofer carries the standard warranty only.

What voids a roof warranty?

Mixing another brand's underlayment or accessories into a GAF system, poor attic ventilation, a second layer of shingles over the old roof, a later alteration by another contractor, and not registering the warranty in time.

Is the warranty transferable?

Some GAF warranties can transfer to the next owner once. Ask David which one your roof carries and keep the certificate with the house papers.
