Window and door installation, squared, flashed and sealed

A window is only as efficient as its installation. We replace windows and doors across Long Island the full way: out with the old unit, check the framing, flash the opening, set the new unit square and plumb, insulate the gap, and finish the trim inside and out. You get lower drafts, a house that is quieter, and no second contractor to call for the trim.

What's included

  • Energy-efficient double- and triple-pane replacement windows
  • Full-frame replacement or insert replacement, whichever the opening needs
  • Entry doors, storm doors, patio sliders and French doors
  • Flashing and air sealing at every opening, with low-expansion foam insulation
  • Interior and exterior trim, casing and caulking finished by the same crew
  • Repairs, including hardware and glass replacement
  • Egress windows for bedrooms and finished basements

We set every unit square, shim it, flash the opening and foam the gap, then finish the trim inside and out so nothing is left for another contractor. Window and door work is also where we find the rot that siding hid, and we fix it while the opening is exposed instead of trimming over it.

How a window or door replacement goes

  1. Measure and specify

We talk through style and glass options after every opening is measured. We also go over whether each opening needs an insert or a full-frame replacement. Door measurements cover swing and threshold height, along with hardware.

  2. Order and schedule

Windows and doors are made to order, so there is a lead time. We schedule the install for when everything has arrived and the weather cooperates.

  3. Remove and inspect

The old unit comes out so we can check the rough opening for rot, especially at the sill. Damaged framing is replaced before the new unit goes in.

  4. Flash and set

Sill pan and flashing tape go in first. We set the unit square, plumb and level, shim it at the hinge and lock points, and fasten it to the manufacturer's specifications.

  5. Insulate and seal

Low-expansion foam fills the gap without bowing the frame. Then we apply exterior caulk and seal against air leaks inside.

  6. Trim and finish

Exterior trim or capping, interior casing and stops, hardware adjusted, and every unit opened, closed and locked in front of you.

Window and door options

Vinyl replacement windows

Double-hung, casement, sliders and bays in maintenance-free vinyl with low-E glass and argon fill. The right choice for most Long Island homes.

Full-frame vs. insert

An insert fits inside the existing frame. It's faster and cheaper. A full-frame replacement removes everything to the studs, which is the right call when the old frame is rotted or the opening is being resized.

Entry and storm doors

Fiberglass and steel entry doors that won't warp or rot, with sidelites and transoms. Storm doors add a layer against wind and let light in.

Patio and French doors

Sliding and hinged patio doors with multi-point locks and low-E glass. We install them with a proper sill pan so the deck-side threshold doesn't rot.

What affects the cost

Window and door pricing depends mostly on the units themselves and on what we find in the opening. The main factors:

  • Number of openings and their sizes. Bays, bows and oversized picture windows cost more than standard double-hungs.
  • Unit quality: glass package, frame material, color and hardware.
  • Insert versus full-frame replacement. Full-frame takes more labor and more trim.
  • Rot repair at sills and framing, priced per opening once we can see it.
  • Trim work: capping exterior trim in aluminum, or new interior casing to match existing millwork.
  • Egress or resized openings that require cutting the wall and a header.

Window and door questions

How do I know if my windows need replacing?

Look for drafts you can feel, condensation between the panes, sashes that won't stay up, rot at the sill or a room that's always the coldest in the house. Single-pane windows in Long Island homes built before the 1980s are almost always worth replacing for the heating savings alone.

Should I get insert or full-frame replacement windows?

If the existing frame is sound and square, an insert is cheaper and less disruptive. A rotted frame or one that's out of square calls for full-frame replacement. So does a bigger opening. We check every opening and tell you what it needs. Sometimes it's a mix.

Can you replace windows in the winter?

Yes. Each opening is exposed for well under an hour. We work one window at a time, so the house never gets cold. Winter installs are common on Long Island.

Do you replace the trim too?

Yes. Interior casing, stops and sills, and exterior trim or aluminum capping, are done by the same crew as part of the job. You should not have to find a carpenter to finish a window install.
