Interior and exterior painting that lasts as long as the prep underneath it

Paint is the cheapest way to change a house and the easiest job to do badly. Prep decides everything. The finish lasts exactly as long as the scraping and sanding, the caulking and the priming underneath it. We take time on that work and protect everything that isn't being painted. Paints matched to the surface help an exterior hold up through Long Island winters and an interior look right in daylight.

What's included

  • Interior walls and ceilings, trim, doors, cabinets
  • Exterior siding and trim, porches, decks, fences
  • Scraping, sanding, wood repair, caulking and priming before any color goes on
  • Premium paints and coatings chosen for the surface and the exposure
  • Furniture, floors, fixtures and landscaping covered and protected
  • Color help, with samples on the wall before you commit

Long Island winters make prep matter. We take time to scrape, sand, caulk and prime so the finish holds up. And because we also do siding and trim carpentry, rotted boards get replaced instead of painted over.

How a painting job goes

  1. Walk-through and colors

We check the surfaces for peeling and damage, look at sun exposure, and talk through sheen and color. Sample patches go on the wall so you can see the colors at different times of day.

  2. Protect

Drop cloths go down. Furniture and fixtures get plastic, trim gets tape, and outside, tarps cover plantings and walkways.

  3. Prep

Scrape loose paint, sand glossy surfaces, fill holes and cracks, replace rotted trim, caulk gaps and wash exterior surfaces. This is most of the job.

  4. Prime

Bare wood, repaired areas, stains and drastic color changes get primer so the finish coat bonds and covers evenly.

  5. Paint

Two finish coats, with edges cut in by hand. We roll or spray depending on the surface and allow drying time between coats.

  6. Inspect and clean up

Walk through in good light and touch up where needed. Pull the tape and put everything back where it was.

Painting work we do

Interior rooms

Walls and ceilings get washable finishes; trim and doors get durable enamel. We also repaint whole houses before a sale or after a move.

Kitchen cabinets

Degreasing, sanding, bonding primer and sprayed enamel turn dated oak cabinets into painted shaker for a fraction of replacement.

Exterior siding and trim

We paint wood, fiber-cement and previously painted aluminum siding. Also the trim, the shutters, the doors. The exterior paints flex with temperature changes and resist mildew in Long Island humidity.

Decks, porches and fences

We wash the surfaces and let them dry before applying stains or porch enamels that stand up to foot traffic, sun and salt air.

What affects the cost

Painting is priced by surface area and, more than anything, by the prep it needs. What moves the estimate:

  • Square footage of wall, ceiling and trim, and ceiling height.
  • Condition. Peeling exterior paint or heavily patched walls take far more prep than a sound surface.
  • Number of colors, and how much cutting-in the trim and the doors and windows need.
  • Wood repair and replacement on exteriors.
  • Paint quality and finish. Premium exterior paints cost more per gallon and last years longer.
  • Access: two-story exteriors, stairwells and vaulted ceilings need ladders or staging.

Painting questions

How long does exterior paint last on Long Island?

Seven to ten years on the sunny and windward sides when the job is properly prepped and primed and uses premium exterior paint. Sheltered sides last longer. Coastal homes with salt spray and full sun fall at the shorter end of that range. Skip the prep and you can cut that life in half.

When is the best time of year to paint the outside of a house?

Late spring through early fall, when nights stay above about 50 degrees and the siding can dry between rain. We watch the forecast. We won't paint damp wood or paint ahead of rain.

Do you paint over wallpaper?

We recommend removal. Paint can look fine over wallpaper for a while, but seams show through and the paper eventually lifts. We remove the paper, then skim coat and prime for a wall that stays flat.

Can you paint my kitchen cabinets instead of replacing them?

Yes, if the doors and boxes are structurally sound. Painted cabinets cost a fraction of new ones. The result depends entirely on the prep: degrease and sand, then apply a bonding primer before the enamel. We don't rush those steps.
