Asphalt shingle roofing and skylights, installed to GAF's standard

Architectural shingles are the most common roofing on Long Island for good reason. They handle nor'easters and summer heat, along with winter ice, at a price most homeowners can plan for. We install GAF shingles as a GAF Master Elite contractor. The whole system, from the ice-and-water shield to the ridge vent, follows GAF's specifications and qualifies for their strongest warranties.

What's included

  • GAF Timberline architectural shingles in the full color range
  • Complete tear-off and disposal of the old roof, down to the deck
  • Deck inspection and replacement of any rotted plywood
  • Ice-and-water shield at the eaves and in the valleys, with coverage around every penetration, plus synthetic underlayment and drip edge
  • New step flashing, pipe boots, ridge vent and intake ventilation
  • Skylight installation and replacement, flashed and sealed with the roof
  • GAF enhanced warranties available only through Master Elite contractors

Fewer than 3 percent of roofing contractors in the country hold GAF Master Elite status. You can't buy it. GAF requires licensing, insurance, ongoing training and a record of installations that pass its inspections. That means access to GAF's strongest warranties, up to 50 years, including the Golden Pledge on qualifying jobs. Our own crew does the install, and David is a phone call away the whole time. Most single-family re-roofs take one day.

L.I. Taylor Construction is a GAF Master Elite® contractor (ID 1135609), licensed in Suffolk County (HI-64134), Nassau County (196461) and New York City (2114459-DCA), and fully insured. It is a BBB Accredited Business with an A+ rating. Financing is available for qualifying projects.

How a shingle roof replacement goes

  1. Inspection and estimate

We measure the roof and check the attic for ventilation and past leaks. We also inspect the valleys and the areas around chimneys and skylights. Your written estimate spells out the shingle line and color options, along with the warranty.

  2. Protect the property

Tarps cover the landscaping and siding. Before the dumpster arrives, we protect the driveway and choose a spot where it won't damage the apron.

  3. Tear-off to the deck

All old shingles and underlayment come off so we can inspect the plywood. Soft or rotted sheets get replaced before anything new goes on.

  4. The water barrier

Ice-and-water shield covers the eaves and valleys. It also goes around every chimney, vent and skylight. Synthetic underlayment covers the rest of the deck, with drip edge at every edge.

  5. Shingles, then flashing, then ventilation

Starter strip first. Then shingles, nailed in straight courses with the nailing pattern GAF specifies. We install new step flashing at walls and new pipe boots, plus a ridge vent with matching intake so the attic can breathe.

  6. Clean-up and walk-through

We sweep for nails with a magnet, clear the gutters and remove the tarps. We go over the finished job with you and register the warranty.

Shingle and skylight options

GAF Timberline HDZ

The standard architectural shingle on Long Island, with a dimensional look and a wide nailing zone for a stronger hold. Colors range from charcoal to weathered wood.

GAF Timberline UHDZ and designer lines

GAF Timberline UHDZ shingles are thicker and have more definition for homes where the roof is a big part of the curb appeal. Designer profiles mimic slate or cedar shake.

Ventilation upgrades

Ridge vent and soffit intake, with baffles to keep air moving. A roof that can't breathe cooks its shingles from below and grows ice dams in winter. Most older Long Island homes are under-ventilated.

Skylights

Choose fixed skylights or venting models with manual or solar-powered operation. We install them with the roof so the flashing is one system. We also replace leaking or fogged skylights during a re-roof. That's the cheapest time to do it.

What affects the cost

We measure each roof before pricing it. There's no flat rate. These factors change a shingle roof estimate the most:

  • Roof size and pitch. Steeper roofs take longer and need more safety setup.
  • Number of layers. Long Island homes often have two layers; both must come off, and disposal is charged by weight.
  • Deck condition. Rotted plywood is replaced per sheet. We can't know how much needs replacing until the tear-off.
  • Complexity. Valleys, dormers, chimneys and skylights each add flashing work.
  • Shingle line and warranty level. Standard HDZ with a system warranty costs less than a designer shingle with the Golden Pledge.
  • Ventilation and gutter work done at the same time.

Shingle roofing questions

How long does a new shingle roof take?

Most single-family homes on Long Island are torn off and re-shingled in one working day, weather permitting. Large or steep roofs can run into a second day, as can roofs with several layers and deck repairs.

Can you install new shingles over my old roof?

We don't recommend it. GAF's warranties don't cover it. Layering hides deck rot, traps heat, adds weight and makes the new shingles conform to the old ones. A tear-off costs more up front and lasts far longer.

What does the GAF Master Elite certification mean for my warranty?

GAF's enhanced warranties, including the Golden Pledge on qualifying roofs, are only available when a Master Elite contractor installs a complete GAF roofing system. Those warranties cover materials and workmanship and are backed by GAF, not just by the contractor.

How do I know if my roof needs replacing or just a repair?

Curling or missing shingles, granules collecting in the gutters, daylight in the attic and a roof past 20 years old point to replacement. A single leak at a pipe boot or chimney on an otherwise sound roof is usually a repair. We'll tell you which it is. We don't sell roofs to homes that don't need them.
